Saaaachiiiinnnn: The Legend

I remember watching India play Pakistan in the World Cup (Aus-NZ) in March 1992 at the SCG using a borrowed cable TV connection from our landlord. It was India's 1st encounter with Pakistan in a World Cup match. I was only 7 years old then studying in the 3rd standard. It was a day-night game in Australia. I didn't want to go to school but my mom forced me to. I missed India's batting, rather Sachin's batting (by then he had already become a force). But luckily, we had a half-day in school for some reason and I was elated to be back home and watch the remainder of the match. I was glued to the Star Sports channel till they showed the highlights of Sachin's innings in that match. Sachin scored 54* in that match and India went on to win the match by 43 runs. He went on to score 6 half-centuries in that World Cup.

If not for the gluttonous runs that he scored, it has been the fear of watching him lose his wicket, that made us glued to the TV sets when he batted :-). Today, after 21 years, when I watch him in TV play his last innings in competitive cricket, tears started rolling out of my eyes. We love you, Saaaachiiiinnnn. Thanks for everything. Its you, who has built our childhood. We grew up watching you. You have been no less than God for us.
